How To Unblock A Sink
A blocked sink can be very unpleasant. For many people, they are not sure what is the best course of action. However, there are simple steps you can take to unblock a sink without requiring any special equipment. Importantly, you need to make sure you are ready to see any gunk that may appear when you unclog the drain, rubber gloves are essential.
Top tips to unblock a sink
Plunger
One of the most popular and effective options for unblocking a sink is to use a plunger. You do not need a specific plunging device. A cup can work wonders as a plunger. What you need to make sure is that you can form a seal around the plughole. This will then suck the air out of the pipe which can help to dislodge the blockage. This may not work straight away and will need a pumping action to get rid of the obstruction. You can stop plunging as soon as the water starts to drain away quickly.
Force
Another method to unblock a sink is to use force to try and push the blockage out. Some people try to use hot water from the tap. However, when water is filling up your sink, it may not be effective. Instead, fill a large plastic bottle with hot water and tipping it so that the opening is directly over the plug and then squeezing the bottle hard and fast can help to deliver the water pressure you need to unblock a sink.
Cleaner
Another option to unblock a sink is to use a cleaning solution to dissolve the blockage. One home remedy is to pour baking soda down the plughole and then pour vinegar. This causes a chemical reaction, so do not be alarmed if you see froth appearing up to the plughole. Once you stop hearing the fizzing in the drain, it is time to pour hot water down the sink to flush any remnants through the system.
You can also purchase unblocking solutions, but these can use harsh chemicals, which you may not want lingering in your sink. Alternatively, you can also try using bleach. When using bleach, it works best by leaving it to soak for several hours, or overnight, and then flushing hot water through.
Pipe Clear-Out
If none of the methods above work, then it may mean that you need to clear the blockage by hand. This will involve removing the U-bend and then use a coat hanger, cloth and water to thoroughly clean out the pipe. Remember that water will flow out when removing the U-bend, so you need to have buckets in place to prevent a flood. When fixing the U-bend back on, you need to make sure it is watertight, if needed get hold of plumber’s tape to help secure the U-bend in place.
